White Cypress Pine vs Macrocarpa: What's the DifferenceThey sound similar but they're not the same timber. Genuine Australian White Cypress Pine is CSIRO-rated Durability Class 1 above ground (40+ years) and Class 2 in-ground (15–25 years), and its natural oils make it termite-resistant without any chemical treatment. Cypress Macrocarpa — often just marketed as "Cypress" — is a different, introduced species rated only Class 3 (5–15 years in-ground) and is prone to rotting quickly when buried. It's cheaper for a reason. We don't stock Macrocarpa — always check exactly what timber you're being quoted on.
How to Make Your Timber Fence or Bollards Last as Long as Possible
Paint the in-ground section of each post with a non-hazardous, creosote-based paint (such as Bondall or Diggers Eco) before you set it — this gives you the longest possible life from your timber. Above ground, White Cypress is happy left natural, or painted/stained to suit your property; unlike seasoned hardwoods, it needs no weathering time and won't bleed tannins onto concrete or pavers, so you can finish it the day it's delivered. A re-coat every few years keeps it looking its best.
