Why untreated White Cypress belongs around children

Nothing to leach. White Cypress is durable because of the natural resins in its heartwood, not because of anything pumped into it. There is no CCA, no ACQ, no LOSP. Nothing for small hands to pick up and nothing to restrict.

Rated for the job. Under AS 5604, White Cypress heartwood is Durability Class 1 above ground and Class 2 in-ground, and it is naturally resistant to termites. It is the same timber we have built our bollards and post and rail from since 1996.

From certified forests. Australia's state-owned cypress production forests are certified to AS 4708 (Responsible Wood, recognised under PEFC), and White Cypress has its own independently verified Environmental Product Declaration published by Forest & Wood Products Australia. If your tender asks for an EPD, this timber has one.

Made here. Cut, dressed and arrised in our Kilsyth workshop, in Melbourne's east, and delivered anywhere in Melbourne and country Victoria.

Sizes we cut

All sizes are White Cypress, supplied sawn or dressed all round, in lengths from 1.2 metres up. If your specification calls for 35 mm, we dress our 38 mm boards down so every board is uniform. Priced per board in the calculator, or send us the metres and we will quote it.

Pegs. Pointed untreated hardwood pegs, or recycled plastic pegs where the council specifies plastic. Not cypress: it is short-grained and splits when driven or screwed, so we do not make cypress pegs. Allow one peg every 1.2 metres plus one at each joint, fixed with galvanised screws.

Other sections? The mill cuts to order. Tell us the size and length.

End of life: mulch, not landfill

Untreated cypress timber in a council park at Frankston

This is where untreated timber wins outright. EPA Victoria's rules are clear: only untreated timber may be mulched or applied to land. Treated timber cannot be burned, and CCA-treated timber is prescribed waste that must go to a licensed landfill.

Cypress edging that has done its twenty years can be chipped and spread back on the garden bed it edged. A treated pine board cannot. Multiply that by every playground in a municipality and it is a real line in an asset-management plan, not a slogan.

While it is in service the timber is storing carbon: around half the dry weight of cypress wood is carbon the tree took out of the air.

Timber edging: 150 x 75 mm White Cypress (Callitris glaucophylla), untreated, natural durability Class 1 above ground / Class 2 in-ground to AS 5604, dressed with arrised edges, fixed with galvanised screws to 450 x 50 x 50 mm pointed untreated hardwood pegs at maximum 1200 mm centres. Supplier: Barling's Woodworks, Kilsyth, or approved equivalent.

Or send us the drawing. Email the section, the metres and the site to sales@barlings.com.au and you will have a written quote back, usually the same day. Want it in your council's own standard drawing? Send it and we will return it marked up with the cypress equivalent.

Delivery. Our own truck delivers across Melbourne and regional Victoria, and local pick-up from Kilsyth is welcome. Purchase orders and work orders are welcome, and account terms are available for councils and regular contractors.

Questions we get asked

Is treated pine allowed around playgrounds?

Arsenic-treated (CCA) timber has been restricted from playground equipment and similar high-contact uses since 2006. Other treatments such as ACQ are still legal, and some councils still specify them for edging. Untreated White Cypress avoids the question altogether: there is nothing in it.

Can cypress go in the ground?

Yes. White Cypress heartwood is rated Durability Class 2 in-ground under AS 5604, with an expected life of up to 25 years. Pegs and edging sit at the surface, where it is rated Class 1.

What about termites?

White Cypress heartwood is naturally resistant to termites because of the resins in the timber. No treatment needed.

Do you supply pegs?

Yes. Pointed untreated hardwood pegs, or recycled plastic pegs where a council specifies plastic. Cypress is the wrong timber for a peg because it is short-grained and splits when driven or screwed, so we do not make cypress pegs.

Can you match the timber in our existing playground?

Almost always. Send a photo and the measurements, or drop off a piece. We machine replacement posts, rails, decking and edging to match.

What happens to it at end of life?

Untreated timber can be chipped and used as mulch under EPA Victoria rules. Treated timber cannot be mulched or burned, and CCA-treated timber is prescribed waste.

Why use White Cypress Pine?

Naturally Termite Resistant: Contains natural oils that resist white Termites.
Class 2 In-Ground & class 1 above-ground Durability: Life expectancies of 15–25 years in-ground and 40+ years above ground.
Low Shrinkage Rate: A very low 2.6% shrinkage rate means minimal warping.
F7 Structural Rated: A moderately hard softwood (Janka rating ~6.4 kN)
Sustainably Sourced: Forest-certified and affordable Australian timber.

Are You Getting What You Paid For?

Not all cypress is the same — and it's worth knowing the difference before it goes in the ground.
Cypress Macrocarpa
✘ Not native to Australia — originally from California, commonly grown here as farm windbreaks rather than purpose-grown for structural use
✘ Class 3 durability: rated for 5–15 years
✘ Higher rot risk once buried
✘ Best suited to above-ground use
✘ Needs time to weather before painting
Australian White Cypress
✔ Native Australian species, naturally suited to our conditions
✔ Sustainably harvested from managed Australian forests
✔ Class 2 in-ground (15–25 yrs), Class 1 above-ground (40+ yrs)
✔ Naturally rot- and termite-resistant — no chemicals needed
✔ Built for both in-ground and above-ground use
✔ Ready to paint or stain from day one

100% Chemical Free & End-of-Life Safe

White Cypress Pine is a naturally durable timber, rated Class 1 above ground and Class 2 in-ground, and already contains the natural resins that protect it from fungi, insects and decay. That makes it a genuinely chemical-free choice: no CCA, no ACQ, no treatment at all. It also means a clean end of life. Under EPA Victoria's rules only untreated timber may be mulched or spread on land; treated timber cannot be burned, and CCA-treated timber is prescribed waste for a licensed landfill. When a cypress post or bollard is finally replaced, it can be chipped and go back into a garden bed.

To help it last a lifetime, we recommend adding a non-hazardous protective paint, such as Bondall or Diggers Eco, to the buried section of your post. Even on the highest-rated in-ground timbers, this is the most effective way to get the longest possible lifespan. White Cypress also has an independently verified Environmental Product Declaration (Forest & Wood Products Australia, 2025) for tenders that ask for one.Bondall or Diggers Eco — to the buried section of your post. Even on the highest-rated in-ground timbers, this is the most effective way to get the longest possible lifespan.

Don’t Wait to Paint: Zero Weathering Required

Black painted cypress post and rail fence with two rails along a paddock with horses

Timbers like Merbau and Spotted Gum need a long seasoning period — exposed to sun and rain, they slowly release their natural oils and tannins. Paint them too early and the finish fails. Wait too long and the timber turns grey and splits.
The White Cypress Solution: White Cypress Pine is ready for the brush the moment it's delivered. It's naturally stable and needs zero weathering time.

✔ No Tannin Bleed: Won't stain your concrete or pavers.
✔ No Waiting: Complete the job in a single weekend.
✔ Superior Adhesion: Bonds securely for a finish that lasts years.
