What a Woodshield bollard is

Untreated pine, sealed for life. A Woodshield bollard is a chemical-free pine core, about 112 mm across, fully encased in roughly 5 mm of recycled polymer with solid plastic end caps, for a finished diameter of about 120 mm. The polymer is made from washed and granulated irrigation dripper tube, so the skin is recycled plastic that would otherwise be landfill.

Nothing to rot, rust, splinter or paint. The seal keeps water out and keeps the timber from drying and splitting, so fasteners stay tight. No termites, no chemical treatment, no maintenance. Woodshield puts the coated post at four to five times the life of a treated pine post, with a 40% higher breaking force.

Made in Victoria. The bollards are made at Shelton Timber's plant in Colac, a business that has been sawmilling since 1966. Woodshield posts have been in the ground in Australia since 2004, the product is certified organic (ACO), and it won the Australian Fencing Industry Award in 2020.

Installs like any timber bollard. Ram it or concrete it in, treat it like timber. Black is the standard colour; white runs are made for the equine industry and other colours can be made to order.

The solar light

A light where there is no power. The light head is moulded from Japanese bullet-proof polycarbonate, rated IP68, and screws to the top of the bollard with anti-theft Torx screws (the driver bit comes with it). It charges from its own solar panel in about eight hours and runs for about 72 hours on a charge in constant mode. White is the most popular colour; orange, green, blue and red are also available.

Where it earns its keep

End of life

The whole point of the product is that it is a circular-economy item: recycled plastic on the outside, untreated timber on the inside, and recyclable again at the end of its life instead of going to landfill as treated timber does. It sits well with the chemical-free cypress we already supply councils.

Ordering and delivery

Ordered in, not off the shelf. Woodshield bollards ship from Colac daily or weekly. Full packs of 24 come to Kilsyth with delivery included; smaller quantities come by courier at cost. For a big job we can have them sent straight to site.

Lights retrofit. The solar light fits after the bollard is in the ground, so a capped bollard today can be a lit one later.

Warranty. Woodshield's 10-year limited warranty covers defects in the recycled-plastic coating. It has to be registered on Woodshield's website within 14 days of the invoice, and it does not cover impact damage or a bollard that has been cut. We will send you the warranty document with your invoice.

Questions we get asked

Is it a vehicle barrier?

No. It is a 120 mm timber-core delineation bollard with an optional light. For a heavy or impact-rated bollard, talk to us about our cypress range.

Can it be cut to height on site?

Cutting opens the sealed end and voids the warranty, so order the length you need. Custom lengths are made to order.

Does the light need wiring?

No. It has its own solar panel and battery, charges in about eight hours and runs for about 72 hours on a charge.

What colours does it come in?

Black as standard. White is made in runs for the equine market, and other colours can be made to order. The light comes in white, orange, green, blue and red.

Will it rot or get termites?

No. The untreated pine is fully sealed in recycled plastic, so there is no path for water or insects.

Where is it made?

At Shelton Timber in Colac, Victoria, from Australian pine and Australian recycled plastic.

Why use White Cypress Pine?

Naturally Termite Resistant: Contains natural oils that resist white Termites.
Class 2 In-Ground & class 1 above-ground Durability: Life expectancies of 15–25 years in-ground and 40+ years above ground.
Low Shrinkage Rate: A very low 2.6% shrinkage rate means minimal warping.
F7 Structural Rated: A moderately hard softwood (Janka rating ~6.4 kN)
Sustainably Sourced: Forest-certified and affordable Australian timber.

Are You Getting What You Paid For?

Not all cypress is the same — and it's worth knowing the difference before it goes in the ground.
Cypress Macrocarpa
✘ Not native to Australia — originally from California, commonly grown here as farm windbreaks rather than purpose-grown for structural use
✘ Class 3 durability: rated for 5–15 years
✘ Higher rot risk once buried
✘ Best suited to above-ground use
✘ Needs time to weather before painting
Australian White Cypress
✔ Native Australian species, naturally suited to our conditions
✔ Sustainably harvested from managed Australian forests
✔ Class 2 in-ground (15–25 yrs), Class 1 above-ground (40+ yrs)
✔ Naturally rot- and termite-resistant — no chemicals needed
✔ Built for both in-ground and above-ground use
✔ Ready to paint or stain from day one

100% Chemical Free & End-of-Life Safe

White Cypress Pine is a naturally durable timber, rated Class 1 above ground and Class 2 in-ground, and already contains the natural resins that protect it from fungi, insects and decay. That makes it a genuinely chemical-free choice: no CCA, no ACQ, no treatment at all. It also means a clean end of life. Under EPA Victoria's rules only untreated timber may be mulched or spread on land; treated timber cannot be burned, and CCA-treated timber is prescribed waste for a licensed landfill. When a cypress post or bollard is finally replaced, it can be chipped and go back into a garden bed.

To help it last a lifetime, we recommend adding a non-hazardous protective paint, such as Bondall or Diggers Eco, to the buried section of your post. Even on the highest-rated in-ground timbers, this is the most effective way to get the longest possible lifespan. White Cypress also has an independently verified Environmental Product Declaration (Forest & Wood Products Australia, 2025) for tenders that ask for one.Bondall or Diggers Eco — to the buried section of your post. Even on the highest-rated in-ground timbers, this is the most effective way to get the longest possible lifespan.

Don’t Wait to Paint: Zero Weathering Required

Black painted cypress post and rail fence with two rails along a paddock with horses

Timbers like Merbau and Spotted Gum need a long seasoning period — exposed to sun and rain, they slowly release their natural oils and tannins. Paint them too early and the finish fails. Wait too long and the timber turns grey and splits.
The White Cypress Solution: White Cypress Pine is ready for the brush the moment it's delivered. It's naturally stable and needs zero weathering time.

✔ No Tannin Bleed: Won't stain your concrete or pavers.
✔ No Waiting: Complete the job in a single weekend.
✔ Superior Adhesion: Bonds securely for a finish that lasts years.
