For years the last question on a post and rail quote was "and what about the gate?" Timber gates sag, and a galvanised farm gate looks wrong on a heritage fence. The Kangaroo Sunshine cast joint gate is the answer: cast iron joints on galvanised tube rails, a cast kangaroo in the centre, primed and powder coated, hung on adjustable cast hinges with grease nipples, latch included.
Made to your opening. Every gate is made to order in North Geelong by Big Red Wire, one of the few fencing manufacturers still 100% Australian owned. Give us the tight measurement between your posts and it comes back 1100 mm high in any opening from 1.2 m to 4.2 m, usually in about three weeks.
Supplied with the posts. A 3.6 m gate wants a 200 x 200 mm post each side. We machine 200 x 200 White Cypress posts to length in Kilsyth, so the gate, the posts and the post and rail all come from the one place.
Every gate is made to order to your opening, so we quote each one rather than run a price list. Tell us the opening width, the colour and whether you want us to supply the cypress posts, and you will have a written price back, usually the same day. All gates are 1100 mm high (the hinges and handle sit a little higher), primed and powder coated in your choice of heritage or Colorbond colour, with hinges and latch.
Freight. Gates leave the Geelong factory bubble-wrapped on a pallet. We quote freight to Kilsyth or to your site with the gate, or you can collect from Geelong yourself. A gate is heavy, so someone needs to be on site to help unload.
Heritage colours as standard: Primrose, Federation Red, Heritage (Deep Brunswick) Green, White Birch, Mist Green, Gloss White and Gloss Black.
Colorbond colours as standard too (the metallic range excluded), so the gate can match a roof or a shed. Any other powder coat colour can be done for the cost of the extra powder.
Honest note on the finish. Powder coat on a gate that gets opened every day will pick up chips over the years, and the manufacturer does not warrant the coating. Wash it down now and then and touch up any chips and it will look right for a long time.
For the front path or a driveway, Big Red Wire also makes the classic Federation-style woven-wire gate: a 27 mm galvanised tube frame with stainless steel scrolls, silicon-bronze welded, filled with single or double loop woven wire, galvanised or powder coated. Eight styles: Alexandra, Balmain, Cambridge, Devonport, Euroa, Franklin, Glenferrie and Welcome.

One gate at a time is fine. Most of our gate orders are one or two gates on a post and rail fence, and the factory is happy with that. Trade accounts with Barling's cover the posts, rails and bollards; gates are quoted per job.

White Cypress Pine is a naturally durable timber, rated Class 1 above ground and Class 2 in-ground, and already contains the natural resins that protect it from fungi, insects and decay. That makes it a genuinely chemical-free choice: no CCA, no ACQ, no treatment at all. It also means a clean end of life. Under EPA Victoria's rules only untreated timber may be mulched or spread on land; treated timber cannot be burned, and CCA-treated timber is prescribed waste for a licensed landfill. When a cypress post or bollard is finally replaced, it can be chipped and go back into a garden bed.
To help it last a lifetime, we recommend adding a non-hazardous protective paint, such as Bondall or Diggers Eco, to the buried section of your post. Even on the highest-rated in-ground timbers, this is the most effective way to get the longest possible lifespan. Timbers like Merbau and Spotted Gum need a long seasoning period — exposed to sun and rain, they slowly release their natural oils and tannins. Paint them too early and the finish fails. Wait too long and the timber turns grey and splits.
